Interior Designers Should Start with the End in Mind

EP 169 | Why Interior Designers Should Start with the End in Mind with Nicole McGuire

podcast

Successful interior design projects begin with a clear vision of the final result.

In this episode, Kimberley Seldon is joined by Nicole McGuire to discuss why interior designers must “start with the end in mind” by leading projects strategically, building strong trade relationships, and guiding clients through a well-managed process from beginning to completion.

Designers are uniquely positioned to reverse engineer projects based on the client’s goals, lifestyle, and desired outcome. Nicole shares insights on project leadership, collaboration with contractors, and why taking an active leadership role creates better experiences and results for everyone involved.

In this episode, we learn:
• Why starting with the desired outcome improves project planning and execution
• How interior designers create successful projects by leading the process strategically
• Why contractor licensing requirements vary significantly across states
• How contractor licensing may benefit projects but does not always guarantee consumer protection
• Why strong relationships with trades and contractors are essential for project success
• What it means to build a “double bottom line” in your business
• How leadership, planning, and collaboration help interior designers deliver stronger client results
• Why beginning with the end goal creates greater clarity, efficiency, and profitability

Nicole McGuire was raised in a home-building family—literally, tootling around construction sites as a kid with her father. After college, she partnered with her father through and began a new venture, building spec homes, and eventually creating custom homes and personally curated design pieces under her own private label, The McGuire Home Collection. When she’s not busy on job sites, Nicole is studying Sustainable Business Strategy at Harvard University in the hopes of growing her business through social and environmental sustainability standards. Dad would be proud!
